Gillick Branches

The ongoing challenges of finding the ancestral links to the MANY Gillick branches

In Ocean Crossings, many times Gillicks/ Gilicks/ Giliks were heading for the same people in Sherbrooke, Quebec and in Montreal. It was also very important to note the peoples’ names in the country they came from.

Who was the Ancestral Link for all these branches?

I knew from when I was a child that particular people were cousins, but I did not know the ancestral link. Finding the ancestral link continues to be of great interest!

Glick and Chaplick Families

My grandmother, Sophie Gillick, is with her cousin Joe Gillick in Sherbrooke.

According to the 1911 Census, Joe was born Jan 1889. In 1911 he was living with Sam Echenberg and his family. Joe died 7 Jun 1956.

Dean Echenberg shared this memory on September 16, 2010.

"The picture of Joe Gillick made my heart skip a beat and brought tears to my eyes.It brought back a flood of memories....... it is him, there is no doubt. He never married and was something of a sweet loner. You just wanted to hug him. I recall silly things about him. He was eunuchoid for lack of a better word. ...I just remember him as having no facial hair...so strange. He always seemed to hang around my father, not exactly buddies, but close. I dont think anyone was closer to him. My father sort of took him under his wing and watched out for him.....(my father was an athletic guy and sort of the protector of the Jewish kids in Sherbrooke during the 20s and 30s) I don't know any other work that Joe did. He was so much a part of my youth and my father's life. His age seems to fit. Perhaps a few years older than my father who was born in 1908, the year before he left Ostropol with his mother for Sherbrooke. Joe spoke English clearly and had a high voice with a slight accent which would also fit."
